ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Also known as endodontics, Root Canal Treatment can relieve toothache and save an infected tooth.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a dental procedure aimed at saving a tooth that is infected or severely decayed by removing the infected pulp from within the tooth, cleaning the root canals, and sealing them to prevent further infection.

Does Root Canal Treatment hurt?

No, the procedure itself is not painful because local anaesthesia is used to numb the area. You may feel slight pressure during the treatment, but most patients report minimal discomfort. After the procedure, some mild sensitivity or discomfort is common, but it can easily be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

How long does Root Canal Treatment take?

The duration of a root canal procedure depends on factors such as the complexity of the case and the number of root canals involved. An appointment may take 1-2 hours and more than one appointment may be needed to ensure the root canals are thoroughly disinfected and sealed.

What happens after treatment?

Post-operative discomfort is normal to experience. This is typically manageable with over-the-counter painkillers and subsides after a few days. After treatment, a permanent protective restoration, commonly known as a crown or onlay, may need to be placed.

WHAT TO EXPECTMaking your treatment
easy & comfortable

1
Consultation & Assessment
Your dentist will assess you, diagnose any tooth infection and recommend treatment. A pre-operative x-ray will also be taken to help with this.
2
plan
Once your dentist has performed the assessment they will discuss your treatment options and costs. If you decide to proceed with treatment, your appointments will be booked.
3
Treatment
Your appointment will start with a local anaesthetic to make treatment comfortable. Your dentist will ensure that you are comfortable before proceeding with treatment. The root canal(s) must be located, disinfected and shaped. For your safety and to prevent contamination, a specialised rubber sheet is used to isolate the tooth away from the rest of your mouth. X-rays will be used to monitor progress during treatment.
4
finish
Once, the root canals are fully disinfected and shaped they must be sealed. A temporary filling is placed to protect it until you return for the tooth to be prepared for a crown or onlay. Your dentist will give you some after-care advice.
